Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; perhaps originally modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: High Dutch adj., -er suffix1.
Etymology: < High Dutch adj. + -er suffix1, perhaps originally after German Hochdeutscher person from southern Germany (16th cent.; now rare and colloquial, only in sense ‘speaker of High German or standard German’). Compare Dutcher n.1 Compare earlier High Dutchman n.
1. A German, esp. (in later use) a German settler as distinguished from a Dutch settler or descendant in the United States. Cf. High Dutch n. 2. Now historical and rare.In quot. 1671 perhaps spec.: a person from southern Germany.
