单词 holy-day
释义

holy-dayn.

/ˈhəʊlɪdeɪ/
Forms: see holiday n.
Etymology: Old English hálig dæg , two words, with the adjective subject to inflection; Middle English early and northern haliȝ , haly day , midland and southern hooly day , holy day , holyday . In early times, more usually a compound, Old English háligdæg . Middle English haliday , later holiday n. Since the 16th cent. the habit has more and more prevailed to use the analytical form, whether written holy day , holy-day , or holyday , in the original sense, and to restrict holiday /ˈhɒlɪdeɪ/ to the sense ‘day of recreation’ (although the spelling holiday , in the sense of holy day , has not become quite obsolete). See holiday n. 1.
A day consecrated or set apart for religious observance, usually in commemoration of some sacred person or event; a religious festival.
