Etymology: < high adj. + sea n. (compare discussion at high adj. and n.2 Compounds 1). Compare post-classical Latin altum mare high sea (from 13th cent. in British sources in the phrase in alto mari ), Anglo-Norman halte mer and Middle French haute mer (12th cent. in Anglo-Norman in the phrase en halte mer ; French haute mer ), and Middle High German hōh sē , German hohe See , in combinations Hochsee- ). Compare also classical Latin altum the deep, the sea (see altumal adj.).

1. The deep or open sea; the main (main n.1 5a). Law: (a) British the sea regarded as being within the jurisdiction of the courts of admiralty (now historical); (b) the area of the sea outside the territorial jurisdiction of any nation; international waters (cf. mare liberum n.).
