Etymology: < (in 17th cent.) French apprendre (Old French aprendre ) to teach, inform (past participle appris , -ise ), on analogy of comprise, surprise, and French comprendre , surprendre . A(p)prendre < Latin adprendĕre < adprehendĕre ‘lay hold of,’ had passed from the sense of ‘lay hold with the mind, learn,’ to ‘teach, inform’: see apprehend v. (apprise n. was obsolete before 1500, and had nothing to do with the formation of this verb.)
