Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Hindi. Partly a borrowing from Urdu. Partly a borrowing from Persian. Etymons: Hindi hindavī; Urdu hinduwī; Persian hinduwī.
Etymology: < (i) Hindi hindavī, hindvī and Urdu hindwī, hinduwī (adjective) relating to India or an Indian language, (noun) Indian person, also denoting the Hindustani or Hindi languages, and its etymon (ii) Persian hinduwī, in the same senses (11th cent. or earlier as adjective, now rare), < hindū (noun) Indian, Hindu (see Hindu n.) + , suffix forming adjectives expressing belonging. Compare Hindi n. 2 and Hindustani n. 1.In Persian hinduwī has now been largely superseded by hindī Hindi n., similarly in Hindi and Urdu. Variant forms. The α. forms reflect transliterations of the Hindi etymon, as written in Devanagari script. The β. forms apparently reflect readings of the etymons in Persian-Arabic script, which have been influenced by Urdu hindī , and Persian hindī , respectively (see Hindi n.). The γ. forms reflect transliterations of the Urdu and Persian etymons, as written in Persian-Arabic script.
