Origin: A variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymon: hickwall n.
Etymology: Folk-etymological alteration of hickwall n. (compare e.g. the variants high-hoe and hew-hole at that entry), after high adj. and hole n., perhaps on account of the typical location of its nest inside a nesting hole in a tree. Compare earlier nick-hole n.
U.S. Now rare.
The northern flicker, Colaptes auratus, a brownish woodpecker with a spotted underside and a black crescent on the breast, found in North and Central America. Also called high-holder.Now chiefly in lists of names.
