Etymology: < German Histiologie (1833 or earlier) < ancient Greek ἱστίον cloth, sail ( < ἱστός web (see histo- comb. form) + -ιον , diminutive suffix) + German -logie -logy comb. form. Compare French histiologie (1841 or earlier).
Now rare.
