Etymology: < Latin Hibernia, a corrupted form of Iverna (Iuuerna , Iuverna , Iuberna ) = Greek Ἰϝέρνη , Ἰέρνη = Old Celtic *Iveriu (accusative *Iverionem , ablative *Iverione ), whence Irish Eriu , accusative Eirinn , Erinn Erin, later Middle Irish nominative and accusative Eri (whence Old English Yra- , Iraland ) Ireland. See -an suffix.
