Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: honey n., guide n.
Etymology: < honey n. + guide n. In sense 1 partly after South African Dutch honingwijzer.
1. Any of various small birds of the family Indicatoridae of Africa and South Asia, related to woodpeckers and barbets, many of which feed on beeswax or bee larvae; esp. (more fully greater honeyguide) Indicator indicator, of sub-Saharan Africa, which attracts humans and other mammals, esp. honey badgers, to bee nests.
