单词 astrologer
释义

astrologern.

Brit. /əˈstrɒlədʒə/, U.S. /əˈstrɑlədʒər/
Forms: Middle English asstrologer, Middle English astrolegere, Middle English astrologeer, Middle English (in a late copy) astrologier, Middle English– astrologer.
Origin: Probably of multiple origins. Probably partly formed within English, by derivation. Probably partly a borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: astrology n., -er suffix1; Latin astrologus , -er suffix1.
Etymology: Probably partly < astrolog- (in astrology n.) + -er suffix1, and partly < classical Latin astrologus astrologue n. + -er suffix1; compare -loger comb. form, and see discussion at that entry. Compare later astrologian n. and astrologue n. and the foreign-language nouns cited at those entries. Compare also astronomer n. and earlier astronomien n., with which the word shows semantic overlap.
1.
a. Originally: †a person who studies the science or art of astrology (as it was understood in medieval times) (cf. astrology n. 1; obsolete). In later use: a person who is expert in or who practises astrology as a means of foretelling human events.
