单词 hough-sinew
释义

hough-sinewn.

Etymology: Old English hóhsinu , < hóh (see hough n.) + sinu sinew n.Old English hóhsinu corresponds in formation to Old Frisian hôxene , hoxne , Old Norse hásin , Old High German *hâhsina , hâhsna , Middle Dutch haessene , Dutch haassen , later haasse , haas , in same sense (Old Germanic type *haŋha-sinu ). The analytical meaning in Old English is ‘heel sinew’, but the quots. show it applied to the hamstrings of horses. The original long ō was shortened before the consonant group, so that it gave the later hoxen (hox n.1), hockshin n., huckson , huxen n. The uncontracted form in late Middle English and Scots may be a new formation from the elements.
Obsolete.
The sinew of the hough or hock; applied, in humans, to the popliteal tendons, or hamstrings, at the back of the knee; in a quadruped, to the tendon of Achilles.
