Pathology.
Severely abnormal brain activity characterized by recurrent irregular spikes and slow waves in the electroencephalogram, which is usually associated with epileptic (so-called ‘salaam’ or ‘infantile’) spasms in infants.

1952 F. A. & E. L. Gibbs Atlas Electroencephalogr. II. vi. 24/1 The abnormality is almost continuous, and in most cases it shows as clearly in the waking as in the sleeping record. It is referred to as hypsarhythmia [sic] (the prefix hypsi, meaning high or lofty, elided with arhythmia).
