Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Hystricidae.

Etymology: < scientific Latin Hystricidae (1827; 1821 as Histricidae) < Hystrix , genus name (1758; < classical Latin hystric- , hystrix porcupine < ancient Greek ὑστριχ- , ὕστριξ porcupine, of uncertain origin: see note) + -idae (see -id suffix³).Ancient Greek ὕστριξ was derived by ancient authors from ὗς swine (see hyena n.) + τριχ- , θρίξ hair (see tricho- comb. form¹), i.e. with swine hairs, but most modern scholars derive it from a prefix also seen in ὕστερος later (see hystero- comb. form¹) + τριχ-, θρίξ hair, i.e. ‘with rising hairs’. Neither explanation is entirely satisfactory.
