单词 | ignis fatuus |
释义 | ignis fatuusn. 1. A phosphorescent light seen floating at night over marshy ground; = will-o'-the-wisp n. 1a.Atmospheric lights called ignis fatuus or will-o'-the-wisp often appear in folklore and were sometimes thought to have a supernatural origin. When approached, the ignis fatuus appeared to recede, and finally to vanish, sometimes reappearing in another direction. This led to the notion that it was the work of a mischievous sprite, intentionally leading travellers astray. Some possible scientific explanations include chemiluminescence, bioluminescence, or the ignition of a volatile gas, e.g. methane, phosphine (PH3), or diphosphane (P2H4), produced by organic decay in marshes or swamps. Now rarely reported.
