Etymology: < Latin Īlias, Īliad-, < Greek Ἰλιάς (1) sc. γῆ, the Troad, Troy, (2) sc. γυνή, a Trojan woman, (3) sc. ποίησις, the Iliad; < Ἴλιος, Ἴλιον Ilion, Ilium, Troy, the scene of the Trojan war. Compare French Iliade (16th cent. in Littré).
1. One of the two great epic poems of ancient Greece (the other being the Odyssey) traditionally attributed to Homer, describing the ten years' siege of Ilium or Troy by the Greeks.Sometimes used, with ordinal numeral, for one book of the Iliad: hence formerly in plural for the whole poem.
