Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin immānis.
Etymology: < classical Latin immānis savage, brutal, vast, huge, immense, tremendous < im- im- prefix2 + early Latin mānis , mānus good (see mane adv.). Compare Spanish imane (a1550), Italian immane brutal (a1472), huge, vast (a1566).
Now rare (archaic and literary in later use).
