Etymology: < in prep. + like adj. + wise n.1 Compare likewise adv., ylikewise adv., and alikewise adv. Compare also in like manner at manner n. 9b.Formerly often written as two words (sometimes also as one word); frequently written as one word in Older Scots (the forms illyk weysse and illykvys show assimilation of the consonant cluster). However, word division in Middle English examples and other sources edited from manuscripts frequently reflects editorial choices of modern editors of texts, rather than the practice of the manuscripts.
