Etymology: < Latin incipit ‘[here] beginneth’, used by mediaeval scribes in indicating the beginning of a new treatise, poem, division, etc., in a Latin or (sometimes) English manuscript.
The beginning or first words or lines of a treatise or poem in a MS. Cf. explicit n.2
