Etymology: < Old French escrier (modern écrier ), < es < Latin ex out + crier to cry v. The Anglo-Norman was probably ascrier (see as- prefix2), as escry n. does not appear in English before the time of Caxton, who introduced it from continental French. Aphetized in 15th cent. to scry v.4
