Origin: A borrowing from Italian. Etymon: Italian abrazite.
Etymology: < Italian abrazite (C. Gismondi 1817, in Biblioteca italiana o sia giornale di lett. sci. et arti 5 309) < ancient Greek ἀ- a- prefix6 + βράζειν to boil, of uncertain origin + Italian -ite -ite suffix1; so called on account of the fact that the substance does not effervesce in acid.Ancient Greek βράζειν may be < the same Indo-European base as Latvian murdēt to boil, Lithuanian murgdyti to steep, to soak, murgdytis to splash (in mud). N.E.D. (1884) gives the pronunciation as (æ·brăzəit) /ˈæbrəzaɪt/.
Mineralogy. Obsolete.
A hydrated silicate of calcium, now regarded as identical with gismondine or phillipsite.
