Etymology: Latin: see elecampane n.
A plant so called by Pliny, Columella, and other Roman writers; identified by medieval herbalists with Elecampane ( Inula helenium Linn.); hence, in Botany, the name of the large genus of Compositæ to which the elecampane belongs.
