Etymology: < classical Latin Iōnes, plural noun (see Ionian n.1 and adj.2) + -ist suffix, after Ionism n. Compare German Ionist (A. Fick 1884, in Beitr. zur Kunde der indogerm. Sprachen 9 209).

Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: ion n., -ist suffix.
Etymology: < ion n. + -ist suffix.
Physical Chemistry. Now historical.
A proponent of the theory that solutions contain permanent ions, and that only these take part in the reactions of a solution.The term is particularly associated with the names of Arrhenius (1859–1927), Ostwald (1853–1932), and van't Hoff (1852–1911).
