A disease, first reported in Japan in 1955, caused by the ingestion of cadmium and characterized by severe pain particularly in the back.

1970 Biol. Abstr. 51 4256/1 Rice straw samples used were 2 kinds of stubble grown in the ‘Itai-itai’ disease epidemic district.
1973 Biol. Conservation V. 143 Itai-itai originated in the prefectures of Toyama and Gumma, in north-western Japan. The cause of the affliction, however, is world-wide: rivers poisoned by effluence from smelters.
