Etymology: < Pali jātaka birth story < Pali jāta (use as noun of the past participle of jan- to be born; < the same Indo-European base as kin n.¹) + -ka, derivative suffix.

1. Any of the various stories of the former lives of the Buddha found in Buddhist literature. Cf. birth story n. 2.In quot. 1828 (cited from a glossary) in uninflected plural form; the use of English plural inflections for some of the other items in the glossary (e.g. Sútras; cf. sutra n. 2a) indicates that Játaka is to be understood as an English lemma form.
