Forms: 1800s– jeel, 1800s–1900s jeeil, 1800s– jeeill (rare).
Origin: A borrowing from Manx. Etymon: Manx jeeill.
Etymology: < Manx jeeill, jeell damage (1819 or earlier), cognate with Irish díobháil damage, loss (Early Irish dígbál , dígbáil diminution, loss, damage), verbal noun of do-gaib takes away, diminishes < do- , unstressed variant of dí- de- prefix + -gaib , combining form of gaibid takes ( < the same Indo-European base as post-classical Latin habēre : see habit n.).
Manx English. Now rare.
Trouble; mischief. Also: damage. Frequently in to do jeel.
