Origin: A borrowing from Efik. Etymon: Efik kaiso.
Etymology: < Efik kaiso, used to encourage a person or urge them to keep going ( < ka to go + iso (noun) front), or from the equivalent phrase in a related language; in use as noun probably with reference to supporting calls from the audience. In the α. forms apparently with an intrusive /r/ or /l/ characteristic of Caribbean pronunciation (where these consonants are often interchangeable). With use as noun compare earlier calypso n.In γ. forms probably influenced by calypso n.

A style of Caribbean music of West African origin, associated esp. with carnivals and similar celebrations; (in later use) spec. calypso music. Also: a calypso song. Cf. calypso n.
