assistant bishop n. Christian Church a bishop appointed to act as an assistant to a diocesan bishop, archbishop, etc.; a suffragan or auxiliary bishop.In later use chiefly in the Anglican Church outside the Church of England (where the usual term is suffragan bishop); cf. note at suffragan n. 2.
