Kerguelen cabbage n. (also Kerguelen's Land cabbage) a cabbage-like plant, Pringlea antiscorbutica, of the family Cruciferæ, which is confined to several islands in the region of the Kerguelen Islands.

1847 J. D. Hooker Bot. Antarctic Voy.: Flora Antarctica II. 240 The illustrious Cook first discovered and drew attention to the ‘Kerguelen's Land cabbage’ during his first voyage, when accompanied by Mr. Anderson as surgeon and naturalist. The latter gentleman drew up an account of some of the more remarkable plants which he collected there and in other islands, which are preserved in the Banksian library.

1879 H. N. Moseley Notes by Naturalist on ‘Challenger’ viii. 191 The feature which distinguishes the general appearance of the vegetation of Christmas Harbour..is the presence of the Kerguelen Cabbage in large quantities. The plant grows on the slopes and bases of the cliffs in thick beds. The cabbage is in appearance like a small garden cabbage, but often with a long trailing stalk.
1952 J. A. King in F. A. Simpson Antarctic Today xv. 305 The Kerguelen cabbage (Pringlea antiscorbutica) is not as abundant [in the Prince Edward Islands] as at Kerguelen.
1960 Times 20 Apr. 14/7 There are no trees or shrubs and only some 17 species of other vascular plants, the largest being the so-called Kerguelen cabbage.
