Biochemistry.

A crystalline amino-acid, H₂N·C₆H₄·COCH₂CH(NH₂)COOH, that results from the metabolism of tryptophan and is a precursor of kynurenic acid in man and various animals; β-ο-aminobenzoylalanine.

1931 Chem. Abstr. 25 2444 When tryptophan is injected subcutaneously into rabbits whose metabolism has been lowered by a regime of polished rice, a product intermediate between tryptophan and kynurenic acid is excreted in the urine. The name kynurenine is proposed for this substance.
