Etymology: Middle English knücche, knycche < Old English gecnycc(e (occurring in the sense ‘bond’); from same root as Low German knuck(e, German knocke, a bundle of heckled flax. Ultimate etymology obscure: compare tocnuicte and gecnyht from a verb cnycc(e)an in Lindisfarne Gloss.
