Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Labarraque.
Etymology: < the name of Antoine Germain Labarraque (1777–1850), French chemist and pharmacist, who developed the preparation. Compare eau de Labarraque n.Labarraque first recommended a similar solution (of calcium hypochlorite) for use in abattoirs in his L'art du boyaudier (1822). In 1824 he was called upon to assist in the preparation for burial of the body of King Louis XVIII, who had died of gangrene which had caused extensive putrefaction. In the course of this work he developed the solution which was named after him, and presented it in his De l'emploi des chlorures d'oxide de sodium et de chaux (1825). In Labarraque's liquid, liquid of Labarraque, and Labarraque's liquor after French liqueur de Labarraque (1824 or earlier).
Now historical and rare.
In the genitive and with of. Designating an aqueous solution of sodium hypochlorite, used as a bleach and disinfectant. Chiefly in Labarraque's solution. Cf. eau de Labarraque n.Cf. Javelle n., sometimes used to designate sodium hypochlorite solution but more commonly designating the potassium salt.

1949 R. E. Kirk & D. F. Othmer Encycl. Chem. Technol. III. 683 Sodium hypochlorite solution U.S.P. ‘contains not less than 4 per cent and not more than 6 per cent of NaClO’. This has replaced the former more dilute solution called Labarraque's solution.
1997 New Yorker 6 Oct. 97/2 He explained his radical policies, which included washing hands and instruments,..[and] swabbing everything in sight with bitter-smelling Labarraque's solution.
