Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek λάβρυς.
Etymology: < Hellenistic Greek λάβρυς double-headed axe, considered by Plutarch to be a Lydian word; of uncertain origin (compare note at labyrinth n.).
The sacred double-headed axe of ancient Crete; a representation of this.
