单词 ladycow
释义

ladycown.

Brit. /ˈleɪdɪkaʊ/, U.S. /ˈleɪdiˌkaʊ/
Forms: see lady n. and cow n.1
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: lady n., cow n.1
Etymology: < lady n. + cow n.1 Probably originally reflecting a genitive compound with unmarked first element (see discussion at lady n.). The semantic motivation for the compound is unclear; however, compare German regional Frauenkühlein , Marienkuh , Marienkälbchen ; compare also Middle English Godyscow , lit. ‘God's cow’, (perhaps) a ladybird (a1333) and parallels for this in other European languages (see further H. E. Allen in Jrnl. Amer. Folklore 48 (1935) 191–3). Compare ladybird n. and discussion at that entry, and also ladybug n., cow-lady n. 1.
Now English regional.
= ladybird n. 3. Cf. cow-lady n. 1.In quots. 1583-4 and 1600: an ornamental representation of a ladybird.
