Of, relating to, or characteristic of those forms of Mahayana Buddhism in which lamas play a significant role, such as those practised in Tibet and Mongolia; designating an adherent of such a form, e.g. a Tibetan or Mongolian Buddhist. Cf. Lamaist adj.Now generally avoided in academic contexts due to the implication that these forms of Buddhism constitute a separate belief system.
