Etymology: < late adj.1 + -most suffix. Compare Old English sīþmest latest and also foremost adj. Compare latest adj., last adj., and with later use also lattermost adj. and n.In Old English, use as adverb is also attested. It is uncertain whether there is any continuity of use between the early Middle English and early modern English attestations; the word was apparently re-formed again in the 20th cent.
