Origin: A borrowing from Hawaiian. Etymon: Hawaiian lauhala.
Etymology: < Hawaiian lauhala pandan leaf, formerly also the tree itself, < lau leaf (compare laulau n.) + hala pandan (see hala n.).
Originally: the hala tree, Pandanus tectorius; (now chiefly) the dried leaf of the tree used as a material to make woven items.
