Etymology: < French lettre de cachet (1636; now historical; 1606 as †lettre du cachet ) < lettre letter n.1 + de de prep. + cachet cachet n. O.E.D. Suppl. (1976) gives only the non-naturalized pronunciation (letr' də kaʃe) /lɛtr də kaʃe/. In plural form lettres de cachet after the French plural form.
An official order for imprisonment, exile, or some other punishment; spec. (in pre-revolutionary France) a warrant issued for the imprisonment of a person without trial at the pleasure of the monarch. Cf. letter of cachet at cachet n. 1.
