Etymology: < legal adj. + -ist suffix, originally after French †legaliste (1622 in the passage translated in quot. 1630 at sense A. 1, or earlier; rare before the late 19th cent.; now légaliste ). Compare earlier legist n. With use as adjective compare slightly earlier legalistic adj.
