Etymology: Partly (in sense 1) < post-classical Latin legatorius of or relating to a legate or ambassador (4th cent.; 12th cent. in a British source; < classical Latin lēgātus legate n.1 + -ōrius -ory suffix2) + -al suffix1; partly (in sense 2) < legator n. + -ial suffix.
