Etymology: < auto- comb. form1 + -chrome comb. form. In sense B. 2 (and hence A. 2) after French autochrome (1906 or earlier as adjective in plaques autochromes (plural); 1916 or earlier as noun).

2. A colour photograph produced by an additive process invented by Auguste and Louis Lumière. Now historical.The process was patented by the brothers in 1903 and involved using a single photosensitive glass plate (or later a film) coated with a layer of grains of different colours, which served as colour filters. It was widely used until subtractive colour film was developed in the 1930s.
