Etymology: < the name of Theodore Alexander Lightner (1893–1981), U.S. bridge champion, who devised this kind of double in 1929.

As a modifier. Designating a double, esp. of a slam contract, which calls for an unusual opening lead; of or relating to this. Esp. in Lightner double. Cf. double n. 3q.This kind of double was devised by Theodore Lightner; see etymology.
