Etymology: < post-classical Latin litteratorius grammatical (late 2nd or early 3rd cent. in Tertullian), literary, learned (10th or 11th cent.) < classical Latin litterātor (see literator n.) + -ius , suffix forming adjectives; compare -ory suffix2.The classical Latin author Quintilian rejects litterātōria as a possible equivalent to litterātūra literature n.
