Etymology: < (i) Middle French augmentatif (late 14th cent.; French augmentatif ), and its etymon (ii) post-classical Latin augmentativus causing increase (frequently from c1200 in British sources) < classical Latin augmentāt- , past participial stem of augmentāre augment v. + -īvus -ive suffix. Compare slightly earlier augmentive adj.
