Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; apparently modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: porte- comb. form, glaive n.
Etymology: < porte- comb. form + glaive n., apparently after French porte-glaive (although this is apparently first attested later (1732)).
historical. Now rare.
A member of the military and religious Order of the Knights Sword-bearers, founded in Livonia in the early 13th cent.The Order became part of the Teutonic Order in 1238, forming a branch under a provincial master. In 1562 their territory was converted into the hereditary Duchy of Courland under the control of the kings of Poland.
