Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin longinquus.
Etymology: < classical Latin longinquus situated at a distance, far-off, remote, (of time or distance) long < longē far ( < longus long adj.1 + , suffix forming adverbs) + a suffix also seen in propinquus propinque adj. Compare Italian longinquo (a1342; now literary). Compare longinquous adj.In quot. 1652 after Spanish longincuo (1498; now literary; a1447 as †longinco).
Obsolete.
