A jet engine deriving its propulsive power from the combustion of fuel in a duct or tube into which air is admitted and compressed as a result of forward speed. Now usually called ram-jet.

1945 Westinghouse Engineer Mar. 51/1 The continuous-firing duct engine is relatively little known but is credited to Lorin of France in 1913. It has been under development principally in England under the..name of ‘athodyd’.
