Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: auto- comb. form1, dynamic adj.
Etymology: < auto- comb. form1 + dynamic adj. In sense 1b after French autodynamique (1865 in this sense (in elevateur autodynamique de l'eau , denoting the machine), in Le cosmos 8 681, in the title of a paper read by the machine's inventor Champsaur at a scientific conference held in Paris; 1838 or earlier in general sense ‘produced by its own force’). Compare Byzantine Greek αὐτοδύναμος possessing absolute power ( < ancient Greek αὐτο- auto- comb. form1 + δύναμις power: see dynamo- comb. form).
