Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: long adj.1, line n.2
Etymology: < long adj.1 + line n.2In sense 2 originally after French longue ligne (1690 in the passage translated in quot. 1693. or earlier). With sense 3 compare German Langzeile (1812 or earlier).
1. Fishing. Now frequently in form longline. A long fishing line, spec. a (typically deep-sea) fishing line from which are suspended many short lines with baited hooks.
