Etymology: < long adj.1 + tongue n. Compare slightly earlier long-tongued adj. In sense 2a after German †Lang Zung (1719 in the passage translated in quot. 1731), with reference to the bird's long tongue.

a. An excessive talkativeness or loquacity; a tendency to speak out of turn or reveal secrets. Frequently in to have a long tongue.
