Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin autoicus , -ous suffix.
Etymology: < scientific Latin autoicus (1865 or earlier; < auto- auto- comb. form1 + -oicus (in e.g. dioicus dioic adj.)) + -ous suffix. Compare ancient Greek or Hellenistic Greek αὐτοίκος having his or her own house (attested in an inscription). Compare slightly later autoecious adj. Compare earlier synoicous adj. and later paroicous adj.
